Confessions of a Wedding Photographer: The Scariest 35 Seconds of My Career

After photographing weddings for more than a decade, I've learned one thing...

Even experienced professionals make mistakes.

Hi, I'm Jason Green from JasonOliver Photography, and today I'm sharing one of my biggest wedding day bloopers.

Because let's be honest... after 10+ years in this industry, I've seen some things.

At every wedding, I carry a two-camera setup on my hips. People joke that I look like an old-school gunslinger walking into a room. Honestly, I love it.

Not only does it look cool, but my back thanks me at the end of every wedding day.

On this particular wedding day, we were photographing the couple's first dance at a beautiful venue with a loft overlooking the dance floor.

The bride and groom were completely lost in the moment, dancing together while their family and friends watched.

I decided to head halfway up the stairs to capture an elevated perspective of the room. I switched to my 70-200 lens to get some dramatic shots from above.

I finished taking the photos and instinctively went to clip the camera back into my harness.

Except...

I didn't.

I THOUGHT it clipped.

It didn't.

The moment I let go, gravity took over.

BONK.

The camera started bouncing down the stairs one step at a time.

Ding.

Ding.

Ding.

There I was, running after thousands of dollars worth of equipment, trying to look calm and professional while simultaneously having a complete internal meltdown.

Luckily, the music was loud enough that most guests never noticed.

The bride and groom certainly didn't.

But inside my head?

Pure panic.

When I finally grabbed the camera, the lens was slightly hanging off the body.

My heart stopped.

All I could think was:

"This is going to cost me a fortune."

I quickly reattached the lens, took a few test photos...

Click.

Click.

Perfect.

Everything worked.

No damage.

No issues.

No tears from a grown man.

The rest of the wedding went flawlessly.

But I can honestly say those were the scariest 35 seconds of my entire career.

Here's the lesson:

Perfection doesn't exist.

Even after a decade of experience, mistakes happen.

What matters is how you respond.

Stay calm.

Problem solve.

Keep moving.

Because behind every beautiful wedding gallery is a photographer quietly managing dozens of unpredictable moments you'll never even know happened.

And honestly?

That's part of the magic.
