How to Dip Your Bride Without Dropping Her (Or Throwing Out Your Back)
Let's talk about one of the most requested wedding photos of all time.
The dip.
You've seen it in movies.
You've seen it on Pinterest.
You've seen it all over Instagram.
It's dramatic, romantic, timeless...
...and it's also one of the most commonly executed poses at weddings.
After photographing weddings for well over a decade, I can tell you there's one thing I see over and over again.
People are doing it wrong.
The Biggest Mistake Couples Make
Most grooms think they're supposed to lift their bride with their arms.
That's exactly how you end up with shaky legs, sore backs, nervous brides, and photographers silently praying nothing goes horribly wrong.
The truth?
Your arms aren't doing most of the work.
Your legs are.
Think of yourself like an athlete getting ready to lunge.
Your front foot becomes your foundation.
As you bend your front knee, your body lowers naturally while keeping your back straight. Instead of lifting your bride, you're supporting her weight with your entire body.
That's a much safer—and much more comfortable—way to create that dramatic look.
Brides...This Part Is for You
This might sound funny, but it's the most important advice I can give.
Trust your groom.
Go limp.
Seriously.
One of the biggest reasons a dip feels awkward is because the bride tries to hold herself up.
When that happens, both people start fighting gravity instead of working together.
Relax your body.
Trust your partner.
Let him support you.
The result is smoother, more natural, and much easier to photograph.
Hand Placement Matters
Another mistake I see is poor hand placement.
The groom's supporting arm should be positioned securely behind the bride's back while the opposite arm helps guide her comfortably into position.
This creates stability while allowing the bride to lean naturally instead of feeling like she's falling.
Don't Forget Your Feet
Foot placement changes everything.
The groom's front foot should carry most of his weight while the back foot provides balance.
A stable base creates confidence.
Confidence creates relaxed expressions.
Relaxed expressions create beautiful photographs.
The Secret Ingredient: Direction
Here's something many couples don't realize before their wedding.
Professional photography isn't just about expensive cameras.
It's about direction.
The best wedding photographers aren't simply documenting moments.
They're coaching them.
Every adjustment—where your hands go, where your feet go, how far to lean, where to look—adds up to photographs that feel effortless.
When couples tell me, "We're awkward in front of the camera," I smile because almost everyone feels that way.
My job is to remove that feeling.
I'll guide you into natural positions, help you interact with each other instead of staring at the camera, and create moments that feel authentic rather than staged.
Why Experience Matters
After photographing weddings for over a decade, I've learned something important.
Every wedding is different.
Different dresses.
Different shoes.
Different venues.
Different personalities.
Knowing how to quickly adapt while keeping couples comfortable is something that only comes with experience.
It's why I spend as much time paying attention to my couples as I do my camera settings.
The Best Wedding Photos Don't Feel Like Work
At the end of the day, I don't want my couples remembering a list of poses.
I want them remembering how much fun they had.
The laughter.
The excitement.
The quiet moments together.
The dramatic dip that made everyone cheer instead of panic.
Those are the memories that last.
And when they're captured beautifully, they become photographs your family will treasure for generations.
